DOCUMENTING USE OF A PCI TOOL
How to use this PDS section: Home visitors and Supervisors use PDS to document the use of Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) tools, including PICCOLO, each time a tool is completed. If there are multiple births for one pregnancy e.g. twins, triplets, etc. a PCI tool must be documented for each child.
Why this information is important: Conducting a routine, objective review of parent child interactions using a validated tool provides home visiting staff with valuable insight into specific aspects of parenting behavior. The home visitor can then work with his or her supervisor to provide specific, targeted feedback to families to help support positive parenting and nurturing parent child interactions. Documenting use of PCI tools helps home visitors and supervisors plan home visits with families.

Step-by-step instructions
Fields with an asterisk (*) are required.
1. PCI tools are completed for individual child and parent dyads. For participants with more than one child, a separate PCI tool must be documented for each child. Go to the participant’s profile page. Click Edit next to the appropriate child.
2. Click on PCIs at the top of the screen.
3. You will see each child’s PCI records in the “Parent Child Interaction History” section.
Open PCI windows appear in green. For PICCOLO, open windows begin when a baby reaches 10 months. The first window is open when the baby is age 10-12 months. The two subsequent windows are open for 12 months. In the example below, Baby3’s second window for the 12-24 month PCI window is open from 7/4/2019-7/3/2020. Locked means that a PCI window was missed and information cannot be entered by a home visitor.
3.1 Click Create to enter a PCI observation. You can enter more than one PCI observation per window.
4. Enter the following information in the “Parent Child Interaction” section.
4.1 Participant name: This will auto-populate with the primary participant’s name.
4.2 Child’s Name: This will auto-populate with the child’s name.
4.3 Child DOB: This will auto-populate with the child’s date of birth.
4.4 PCI Status: Select the appropriate response. This field defaults to Completed.
4.5 *Date PCI tool completed: Select the date the PCI tool was completed. If the tool was completed using a video of parent-child interaction, enter the date the tool was completed here, not the date the interaction was recorded. This field is only visible and required if you selected Completed for PCI Status. This field does not appear if you selected Declined or Missed for PCI Status.
4.6 *PCI Tool Used: Select the PCI tool you used.
4.7 *Other, specify: Enter the name of the PCI tool used if you selected Other, specify for PCI Tool Used. This field is required if you selected Other, specify.
4.8 Notes: For completed PCI tools, enter notes about completing the tool with the family or planned follow-up. For example, “Recorded MOB and baby singing and reading books. Supervisor completed PICCOLO observation tool. Supervisor and HV plan to focus on affection and encouragement in future home visits.” Enter information about which staff person completed the tool and whether it was based on an in-person observation or video recording. For missed or declined PCI tools, enter a note explaining why the PCI tool was not completed.
5. Spell Check: Select to check spelling on this page.
6. Save and Close: Select to save the information on the page.
7. Save and Continue: Select to save the record and return to the PCIs screen.
8. Cancel: Select to return to the PCIs screen without saving information on the page.
9. Print: Select to print the record.
10. Check the Ready for Review checkbox when the PCI record is ready for a supervisor or coordinator to review.
11. To add another PCI observation to the open window, return to the “Parent Child Interaction History” section. Click the green plus sign next to the PCI tool you entered previously. In the example below, Baby3 has two PCI tools already documented in the open PCI window.
11.1 Repeat step 4 to enter details about the PCI tool.
12. Click Edit to edit a previously entered PCI tool.
